GRISHA β’ Grisha practice the 'Small Science' as it's called in their world. This means that they manipulate matter at its most fundamental level. They cannot create matter, but only manipulate what exists to their advantage. Using powers can exhausts a grisha, even if in the long run the power extends their life. Zoya uses her powers to the point where she passes out and her nose bleeds, but her body is glows with the strength of her power ( metaphorical glowing in this instance ). In the Grishaverse there is a theory the 'like calls to like,' but it is taken a step further by defining the grishas' power as 'if the science is small enough, then we are like all things.' This is considered advanced theory in the grisha world and is known and practiced by very few, only the strongest of the grisha. There is an implication that if grisha can manipulate at the smaller level, and the if the science is small enough they are like all things, that grisha are not confined to their one ability but can practice all grisha abilities. Ilya Morozova for example, the greatest grisha and fabrikator ever known, was also practiced healing capabilities, a corporalki ability when he was materialki.
COMBAT TRAINING β’ Aside from her abilities, Zoya was also trained in combat. Grisha steel is earned. In this way, a grisha must show exemplary skill without ability to earn their own grisha blade. Zoya is skilled with hand to hand combat, her favorite, but also with swords, twin axes, and daggers. She is further trained with these weapons when combating the dragon/man Juris as a way to teach her to let loose and stop focusing on her summoning as much. She possesses significant prowess, often using feints in her fights, as she's able to withstand the onslaught from a warrior saint.

| ZOYA WIKIA
| KING OF SCARS WIKIA SUMMARY
⬑ Personality:
+ BRAVERY
Commander Nazylensky has dedicated her life to her country and people. Zoya has known what it is to be poor and desperate. She has witnessed firsthand the horrors that those without options will resort to, and as such has made it her life goal to better the world around her so that people don't have to suffer the way she once did. Because of these desires, Zoya is certain to cultivate the bravery within her when facing down danger. Her bravery doesn't come without fear, simply a desire to push fear away and act where others would hesitate. When a monster threatens her very life, she doesn't run from it. She fights back at the near cost of her own life to protect her king and country. Even when she knows that same monster yet lurks in the body of her friend, she overcomes her fears to help Nikolai find a way to defeat the beast once and for all.
+ UNWAVERING
Along with her bravery, there's an unwavering quality to Zoya that can make her downright ruthless. Zoya does not flinch in the presence of others, even when threatened, and she doesn't give up her ideals so easily. Though she once followed the Darkling, believing he might deliver the better future for their country she dreamed of, he tortured and murdered indiscriminately. Zoya acknowledged the threat in the Darkling to her beliefs and fought to subdue that threat. When Nikolai fears he may succumb to the darkness within him, Zoya promises to put a bullet in his head should things grow so dire. The ruthless commander of the Second Army does not flinch when tempted with power at the price of her ideals as Elizeveta tries to promise her. So often Zoya has choices to run from what is hard and do what is easiest, but she never wavers from her path.
- STUBBORN
Being so brave and unwavering, these traits often swing too far the other way. Zoya can often be stubborn to a fault. Especially when met with beliefs that clash with hers. Having witnessed some of the horrors she has, Zoya does not have the time to suffer those who worship murderers and liars like the Darkling. She causes a sandstorm to frighten local pilgrims who worship the Darkling, being unwilling to listen to Nikolai when he asks her to stop. She also faces a dragon head on when the smarter thing to do would be to retreat. When Zoya makes a decision, she can often be difficult to sway from her path.
+ COMPASSIONATE
While it's hard to see the compassion in the ruthless commander, Zoya bears a great deal of love for her country. She doesn't just know their plight, she understands it on a deeper level. She explains to Nikolai that the draft saved a lot of people, especially young women, from a terrible fate that befalls the poor and desperate. While the draft is imperfect as it suits the army, it does other goods that some can't hope to understand. She feels this way because she hopes to see her country past a point where people are without hope. She doesn't only show compassion to her country, either. When young tiger cubs are captured by other Grisha for amplifiers, she sets them free and shields them from another adult tiger at her own expense. Zoya bears the weight of the world on her shoulders because she feels so deeply for it.
+ LOYAL
Due to her compassion and unwavering sensibilities, Zoya is a loyal person to have in one's corner. So long as you are loyal to her, she will always repay in kind. While she did turn on the Darkling, he betrayed his country and Zoya personally, therefore losing the loyalty he had garnered. Zoya was never quite close with Alina, nor did she buy into her sainthood, yet when Elizaveta mocks Alina's saint status and the people's trust in her Zoya tenses and nearly quarrels on behalf of her retired friend. A friend in Zoya is a friend for life.
- RUTHLESS
Zoya is described as ruthless often, and the description couldn't be more accurate. While Zoya is compassionate, she does what needs to be done for the greater good. If Nikolai becomes a threat, she will not hesitate to kill him. When Nikolai needs Zoya to remove the thorn in his chest to try to complete a ritual, while concerned she might kill the man Zoya's ruthless nature wins out. While she can be ruthless in a bad way, she can also do so with good intentions. It does not make her easier to bear, however, and it can be difficult to hear what she says. Such as when she burns the effigy of Nikolai's true father and states they should kill the man before anyone figures out Nikolai is really a bastard. It is ruthless and cruel, but it serves a purpose.
+ SELF-SUFFICIENT
Often men dream of Zoya as having a gentler side needing cultivation and care, masked by a harsh nature to protect herself. The reality is, Zoya needs no one to protect her. Her harsh nature isn't because she's guarding a gentler side of herself that needs to be freed, but rather because she is harsh. The world can be cruel, but Zoya can be worse. Often Nikolai will run to Zoya's aid or get angry on her behalf. While it serves a purpose in helping him summon his monster later, it is eye-roll worthy in Zoya's mind. She does not balk when the guards joke about how good of a lay she must be, she smirks and tells them they have no idea. She does not hide behind a man with guns when a dragon beats down on them, she rushes out to meet the danger. Zoya does not depend on others to fight her battles in any way shape or form. She can manage herself just fine.
- GUARDED
While Zoya does not house a gentler side of herself needing to be brought out with tender care, she is a guarded person. It is not a kinder side she guards, but rather the inner machinations of who she is as a whole. There is a moment where Nikolai asks her about her amplifier simply because he realizes he knows so little of the woman he sits aside. Zoya does not hide who she is because she fears people knowing, though she does not wish people to understand her more than she wants them too, but rather because she fears her own past herself. Zoya does not let herself heal from the wounds of her past and struggles to move past the pain in her life. She holds those pains close to her heart and tells no one of them for fear of reliving them and having to face them again. Juris takes her into her own pain to try to help her open the door in her heart, and she makes great strides with him and Nikolai, but there are few else who will see past her guards.

ETHEREALKI >> Zoya is an Etherealki, meaning she is a summoner. Summoners are broken into three groups: Tidemakers, Squallers, and Inferni. These groups manipulate water, wind, and fire respectively. Sun summoners are newly a part of this order after Alina Starkov's sacrifice in defeating the Darkling. Zoya is a Squaller, meaning that she can manipulate storms. However, Zoya trained with the yet living saint Juris before his murder at Elizaveta's hands. The powerful Grisha taught Zoya that her Grisha training was only to teach students how to limit their powers with rules. Through harsh training, Juris took Zoya's squaller abilities past what they had been with her amplifier and additionally taught her to summon from all three groups.( SQUALLER ) As a Squaller longest, Zoya has a number of talents associated with her ability to manipulate wind.
- Tracking : Feeling the wind patterns, Zoya can sense disturbances on the wind and use this for tracking. The longer it's been since a target came through the harder it is to track.
- Gusts : Gusts can be used to lift things, drive sails, hurl objects or people, etc. It is the most natural and common ability for a Squaller.
- Sound Blanket : Squallers can create acoustic anomalies that help sound travel greater distances or even blankets sound entirely to deafen it.
- Wind Barrier : Zoya can summon immense gusts of wind in such a quickened fashion that it can create a near impenetrable barrier for the duration of her summoning. This is shown when a dragon breathes fire on her and she holds it as long as she can summon.
- Stealing Breath : Another skill requiring great accuracy is Zoya's ability to steal the breath of people and creatures alike.
- Lightning Manipulation : A skill deemed too dangerous for study, Zoya has not only great skill with the ability but has even used it to restart the heart of another.
- Enhanced Strength : While not a clearly defined ability, Zoya seems to be able to summon great bursts of lightning within her blood to make her powerful enough to shatter a broadsword in a single stroke and survive falls from great heights.
- Storm Generation : Zoya is shown to be able to create great storms.
- Wind Running : Zoya is able to give herself a boost to speed by manipulating wind to reduce friction and lift her steps to make them lighter and quicker, nearly carrying herself on wind.
( TIDEMAKER ) While not her primary talent, manipulating water is similar to manipulating storms and thus second easiest to her.
- Frost generation : Combining with her Squaller capabilities, Zoya can freeze water particles in the air quickly to turn them to ice and stop attacks.
- Physical manipulation : Sensing water within plants, Zoya is able to manipulate that to turn thorns at her will.
- Generate heat : Zoya can sense water particles and accelerate their vibration to boil them
( INFERNI ) A skill that takes more practice for the summoner, Zoya has the ability to manipulate flames. This may require two obsidian stones she carries to at least initiate sparks.
- Blue flames : Aside from blasting fire at enemies, Zoya's only skill so far is shown to be making her heat so intense it turns blue and is unbearable.
FABRIKATOR >> This order of Grisha tend to be creatures that manipulate materials found in nature. They are Durasts, who deal with things like metal and steel, and Alkemists, who work in poisons and blasting powders. Zoya is only shown to use this ability once when creating her own amplifiers from Juris' scales. She decides she will need more practice in this, as it is not easy, but she is able to manipulate the material and meld it into cuffs on each wrist.
AMPLIFIER >> At the end of the novel, Zoya obtains a second amplifier to replace her first. Helping to end the life of Juris, the man and dragon, while he hurts her in return, Zoya is able to wear his scales. She gains his memories and a portion of who he was, allowing him to nearly merge with her, in the process. Amplifiers do not typically operate this way, as they are usually only worn to grant greater power and only one at a time. However, Juris taught that power is greater when Grisha give something up as they take from their amplifier as well. That once this process allowed Grisha to become the creatures they slew, as he becomes a dragon. Zoya gains boosts of strength allowing her to fly on storms and manipulate elements quicker, after obtaining this amplifier. Her eyes also glow a brighter blow and turn to slits to match that of a dragon's at periods of intense expression.
